Pros and Cons of Baritone, 7 String, or 8 String Guitars? | Extended Range Guitar Discussion Review
This is a discussion about extended range guitars - 7 string guitars, 8 string guitars, and even baritone 6 string guitars. Do you really need this extended range and these extra strings or are 6 strings enough and these are overhyped gimmicks? This unsponsored discussion goes over the pros and cons of these types of instruments to provide information in case you’re wondering if this type of guitar is right for you.

Solar A1.7 Review: ua-cam.com/video/I-rcdLh0tBo/v-deo.html
Schecter E-7 Review: ua-cam.com/video/D3EDxGBaRnE/v-deo.html
Over the years I’ve used both downtuned 6 string guitars as well as 7 and 8 string guitars to create music that’s both performed on UA-cam and distributed on streaming services such as Spotify. There’s no denying the utility extended range guitars provide. Even if you’re not playing heavy metal, which is where they’re most common, you can still use them to freely create music. For example, background music used in this video was recorded on the 8 string Abasi Larada Master Series you see (Contexture Campaign EP on all streaming services).
Extended range guitars push the physical limitations of the guitar both mathematically (see the acoustic beating phenomenon) and practically, stepping on the toes of the bass. You will need to rethink your guitar tone and choice of notes. If you do, a world of octaves below the standard is available to you and you can create any kind of music from hard hitting modern metal to free meandering jazz.
There are difficulties when picking up an extended range guitar. The extra strings demand both improved muting technique as well as increased attention as the additional string will get in the way of seeing what you’re playing. The difficulty is compounded by any non-standard features such as a multiscale fretboard. These strings will always be present even if you’re not playing them for most of your set, so take into consideration whether you really need those lower notes and whether they’ll fit into your recorded song’s mix or your band’s frequency space.
00:00 Intro and not sponsored
00:39 Use both drop tunings and extended range guitars
00:50 Discussing guitars with either longer scale length or more than 6 strings
01:06 Not reviewing these guitars
Why Extended Range Guitars?
01:17 Benefits of extended range
01:22 No Substitute for hitting the actual low notes
01:51 Trick to get low notes on a 6 string
02:15 Access to low notes without downtuning the standard 6 strings
02:42 Don’t have to play the lowest strings every song
03:03 Baritone 6 strings have the same width neck as standard 6 string guitars
03:10 Guitars with more strings have a wider, flatter neck
03:22 Longer scale lengths for better intonation, tension, and more space at the higher frets
03:28 Multiscale fretboards
Disadvantages of Extended Range Guitars
04:15 Disadvantages
04:26 Thin wide necks back if you prefer thick round necks
04:48 Some songs not possible on extended range guitars if they rely on 6 string tunings
05:34 Looking at more strings takes more thought
06:05 Multiscale shifts top fret markers away from treble side fret positions
06:52 Extended range guitars feel like a different instrument than a typical 6
07:07 Acoustic beating makes close intervals between low notes sound dissonant
07:45 Pitch drift on lower strings
08:07 Evertune is helpful but feels different
08:57 Lowest notes overlap with bass
09:26 Baritone 6 strings long scale length long stretches
09:44 Tuning really low because inaudible clanging
My Preferences
10:19 My preferences based off of my experiences
10:30 Extended range guitars are usable
10:43 6 string guitars will always feel like home
10:59 Use 7 strings if the song calls for it
11:23 My tunings
11:38 8 string as last resort
11:50 Why 1 whole step down tuned
12:07 Mixing low tuned guitars becomes a challenge
12:31 Pitch drift is a big factor
Overall
13:00 Do you need an extended range guitar?
13:04 Yes if you need to hit the low notes
13:24 Otherwise definitely not

I've heard many bands use single coils in the studio to lay down an extra track or two to add in some clarity and definition to the mix. They compliment the humbucker sound very well. There are artists that predominately use single coils, such as early Iron Maiden, YJM, Uli John Roth, Paul Gilbert, Wintersun, early Traci Guns, early Opeth... The very bright mid-forward sound of single-coils is perfect for Modern Metal, as you see in many a tutorial video on how to dial in those heavy guitar tones, they almost always come up with something that sounds close to what you could get by just using single-coils. I've also heard the mid-forward sound pairs very well with low tunings (check out some videos on guys discussing how their Starts or Tele's sound better tuned down) so perhaps you should try putting your Strat in Drop A or something! You can always tame them down to taste with the tone control! Keep Rocking brother! \m/

Yeah all those modern bands love their single and split coil sounds. A is pretty low for a 6 but I've got both this strat and my space T in drop C and they sound great!

Hey man, good video as always. But I got a question. How do you put music on Spotify? Ive been having trouble with that

    • @HighZ
      @HighZ 4 дні тому

Great question. You have to go through a distribution service, but that also means you can release to multiple streaming services at once. You also have to make sure your mixes are below the dB threshold of each streaming service or else they'll clobber it

Hey everyone, quick correction. It turns out according to ibanez wiki that this model of guitars since 2019 has a rosewood fretboard in Japan but for markets outside of Japan, it's macassar ebony! Sorry for the confusion!

Oh interesting! I did some looking and the Ibanez wiki is telling me in 2019 on the models in Japan have Rosewood but for markets outside of Japan, it is in fact macassar ebony! That would explain why it feels so great to play! I'll link this comment and mention this going forward

  • @farahs8341

Do I have to do all of that every time I want to change my tuning? So there is no quick change from E Standard to Drop D in just a couple of minutes to play different songs in different tunings?

    • @HighZ
      @HighZ 6 днів тому

That's right. Changing the tuning upsets the equilibrium between the strings and springs, so you'll have to adjust the trem claw springs and retune. There are some aftermarket devices like the d tuna but they only fit certain bridges

This is what I'm talking about. Electric guitars have so many beautiful shapes and if one has a collection, it's good to have a variety. I personally love to play in my Les Paul shaped guitars and love the aesthetic, as well as the comfort. But my metal heart has always loved Flying V guitars and I do dream of having one someday. Flying Vs just scream metal. Another shape I love is the Warlock shape of some BC Rich guitars like the one I have. Great video brotha

    • @HighZ
      @HighZ 7 днів тому

The flying V is a terrific and in many ways functional shape if you can get around it's shortcomings! And les paul style guitars are absolutely classic. I'll always fall into the tele camp of si gle cut styles but the les paul design is both classy and timeless. And I think we've all wanted a warlock at some point, they definitely have a certain appeal

Strandberg type - probably I will buy prog nx 7 or original nx 8. It still looks kinda cool for a guitar designed to be as ergonomic and versatile as possible, I would say it looks modern, and also - weight is something incredible <3

    • @HighZ

There are a lot of benefits to those headless types of guitars. They personally don't appeal to me but I understand that they do have an audience, and if you like them that's great! I've never played one so I can't speak to them

@@HighZ When it comes to guitar designs, I also love Mayones Guitars and Skervesen Guitars. They are made in the city where I live, but I'm trying to make my whole gear as light as possible, also Strandbergs are cheaper and they have endurneck, which I really want to try, so that's why Strandberg wins to me.

    • @HighZ
